Paris: retracing the key places of the French Revolution

We are in Paris, one of the world’s most beautiful and attractive cities.

Throughout this itinerary, we imagine we are in the last decade of the 1700s, a period of significant social, political and cultural change, definitely not associated with peace and tranquillity. Yet, all around us, carriages, horses, cobblestones, vendors, merchants, and beggars were the frame of what was about to happen, precisely that fateful day in 1789. 

To get a taste of the most significant places of the French Revolution and relive it centuries later, we start at the Royal Tennis Court in the Versailles district. It was here that the first autonomous meeting of the Third Estate took place. We retrace the events chronologically at the crucial locations during the events’ course.

Versailles is a beautiful and great location, we recommend, for those interested, to dedicate at least half a day (even a full day) to it. Once back in Paris, it will be possible to proceed with the itinerary over shorter distances.

For moving around, if you do not have a car, we recommend the use of public transport, especially in central Paris (see the ‘directions’ button in each chapter). The route of our itinerary on the map serves for general orientation purposes only. Please refer only to the location of the marked places, not to the point-to-point sections.
