If we want to visit the marvellous city of Seville with an eye on Flamenco, we cannot but start our journey from the cradle of this art: the Triana district. Let us start from this symbolic point, and begin to breathe in the culture, art, and tradition of this enchanting neighbourhood, home to artists, craftsmen, and of course, singers and dancers. You may ask yourself why you are here now, and what is the background of this place.

Well, looking around, one can see bustling narrow streets, representing a perfect raw frame of Andalusian culture. Flamenco, in fact, was born from the raw energy of the streets, embodying a dance of the people, for the people. Rooted in the close-knit fabric of the neighbourhood, it thrives on the genuine connection through intimate and street-level encounters, such as that of this district: Triana. This human relationship is the very aspect, the essential trait of Flamenco that one has to understand when enjoying its performances. Amidst these very streets, we may discover the origins of Flamenco, and how it brought us here.

Long ago, Flamenco originated and developed in Andalusia, mainly in a triangle of land between Seville, Córdoba, and Cadiz, where the greatest influx of Romani populations was recorded. However, the exact origin of the term flamenco has never been established. In fact, there are various and curious hypotheses about its etymological root, but probably, the closest to reality is derived from the Arabic words “felao” and “mengu“, which come close to the following meaning: wandering peasant. Nevertheless, what is certain, is that flamenco originates from the combination of different cultures, and it is an artistic expression of the Romani population; on the fringes of society for centuries, they made use of this artistic dance expression, usually to be performed in a family environment, as a lament for the persecution they have suffered over history. In fact, the Romani people, apparently arising from a region of Pakistan, began their displacements following conflicts within their own country. They migrated towards the West, searching for freedom, tranquillity and a fixed abode. Over the ages, part of this population, after several arduous voyages and attempts to settle in different countries, finally found a place to settle. This region was exactly this one in Spain: Andalusia.

Here, the Roma people expressed their desire to free themselves, especially from the pain and suffering of the past through music and songs. In fact, flamenco is not just a simple dance, but also a lament, a challenge expressed in three inseparable elements: first, the guitar, second, the so-called “Jaleo” (also known as that clapping of hands and feet), and finally, the shouts of encouragement and the singing. The music deals with fundamental themes of life, such as fatigue, death, loneliness, and misery, representing in a profoundly artistic way the human emotions.
