What would Athens have looked like at the time of the Byzantine Empire? Imagine a cluster of small houses built around the Acropolis, and narrow, winding streets covered with dust in the summer and turned into mud in winter. This is what Athens would have looked like when it was only a small and insignificant city of the empire. Today, thanks to this audio-guided walk, we retrace the ruins of the ancient monuments that still stand as a reminder of the city’s former glory.
Byzantine churches don’t have fixed schedules in place, we suggest verifying accessibility in person. Generally, the entrance is free of charge, and there are typically two daily opening times – one in the morning and another in the afternoon.
Dress codes in Greek Orthodox churches differ, but generally, to show respect to the church and its members, men should avoid shorts, tank tops, and sandals, while women should avoid strapless or thin-strapped attire and ensure skirts and dresses are at least knee-length, with some churches requiring full leg coverage.
Mind that entrance to attractions is highly recommended to enjoy our itinerary to the fullest, but it is not mandatory!
